Is a solid state lithium-sulfur battery a lithium-ion battery? What are the characteristics?
569 2023-05-04
Solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries are a type of lithium-ion battery, but unlike traditional liquid-state lithium-ion batteries, solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries use a solid electrolyte rather than a liquid one. The battery technology uses lithium sulfide as a positive electrode and lithium metal or lithium alloy as a negative electrode to store and release charge through the transfer of ions in a solid electrolyte. Therefore, solid lithium sulfur battery has the advantages of higher energy density, better safety and environmental protection than the traditional liquid lithium ion battery.
Solid-state lithium-sulfur battery is a new battery technology. The positive electrode is lithium sulfide, the negative electrode is lithium metal or lithium alloy, and the electrolyte is solid electrolyte. Compared with traditional liquid batteries, solid lithium-sulfur batteries have the following characteristics:
1. High energy density: Because solid electrolytes have higher ionic conductivity and lower resistance than liquid electrolytes, solid lithium-sulfur batteries have higher energy density.
2. Good safety: Due to the use of solid electrolyte, avoid leakage, combustion and other safety problems in the liquid battery.
3. Environmental protection: inorganic materials are used as electrolytes. Compared with liquid electrolytes, organic solvents will not pollute the environment.
4. Long life: solid lithium sulfur battery has a long life, which can reach thousands of charging and discharging cycles, and has a good tolerance to deep charging and discharging.
5. Challenges to be solved: At present, there are still some challenges in the development process of solid-state lithium-sulfur battery, such as stability under high temperature and high humidity, current density and charge and discharge rate improvement.
